Overview

Jiren the Grey: a Pride Trooper of Universe 11 who called himself its God of Destruction and became “the second god killer” (ep 0022 00:26:10; ep 0024 00:34:00–00:34:15; ep 0063 00:37:29–00:38:56). Before the story he refused to be a destroyer candidate though stronger than Belmod, and spent ten years training in his mind after the Tournament of Power (ep 0004 00:14:45–00:15:02; ep 0008 00:20:46; ep 0022 00:03:49–00:04:43). Sent against Vegito by Marcarita’s slanted vision, he learned the truth from Vegito’s memories, used a time ring to see Belmod slaughter his village, erased Belmod, sided with Vegito and was then trapped by him in the Pyramid of Power for decades, where he grew a demon horn (ep 0022 00:09:21–00:13:51; ep 0026 00:19:01–00:29:54; ep 0028 00:25:08–00:29:27; ep 0052 00:45:51–00:46:05; ep 0057 00:15:27–00:15:42). Out again, he fought Vegito, then Makoto, who drove him to Ultra Demon Jiren and possessed him until Frieza’s fight freed him (ep 0057; ep 0066 00:35:06–00:35:33; ep 0069 00:34:08–00:35:29; ep 0078 00:25:40–00:25:50); he then went his own way, refusing both Vegito and Goku (ep 0085 00:07:18–00:10:07; ep 0136 00:17:20–00:24:33). He returned to fight Lucif beside Goku, Vegeta and Vegito, and died there: he gave Vegito his power and his forgiveness, was cut in half by Lucif, and his body was fused into Vegito (ep 0168 00:39:20–00:40:48; ep 0180 00:29:15–00:31:50, 00:37:36–00:40:43). Other timelines’ Jirens live on (see Variants).

Affiliations & relationships

• Belmod: a former Pride Trooper Jiren swore to protect (ep 0022 00:13:33–00:13:51); erased him for slaughtering his village, friends, family and master (ep 0026 00:27:27–00:29:46).
• Marcarita: he trusted her completely (ep 0022 00:09:11–00:09:16); she recruited him with a slanted vision (ep 0022 00:09:21–00:11:32). Later he summoned her knowing Vegito would kill her — “Yes, she does” deserve it (ep 0028 00:14:20–00:14:42).
• Toppo: fellow Pride Trooper, offered as his training partner (ep 0022 00:17:15–00:17:52); Jiren sends him away, Son Goku being his rival alone (ep 0024 00:02:21–00:03:28); flattened by his giant fist when he comes to punish him for Belmod’s death (ep 0028 00:02:02–00:04:57). By ep 0134 Jiren no longer talks to the Pride Troopers (ep 0134 00:34:35–00:35:08).
• Jiren’s village, friends, family and master: slaughtered when he was a child (ep 0026 00:27:27–00:27:46); the village is “Dora” as heard (ep 0028 00:07:26).
• Gicchin: his master, killed when he was a child (ep 0028 00:07:38–00:07:50; named ep 0029 00:06:53); Jiren wonders if he would be proud (ep 0067) and calls on him in defeat (ep 0208 00:19:23–00:22:31, Omni Vegito’s timeline).
• Ultra Vegito: “former friend and foe” (narration, ep 0022 00:27:18); “square” for the Tournament of Power mercy (ep 0024 00:24:14); learns the truth from his memories and takes one of his time rings (ep 0026 00:19:01–00:24:16); ally — “A god pairing, with the renowned god killer” — then betrayed and trapped by him (ep 0028 00:25:08–00:29:27). Once out, he calls him “Son Goku”, blames him for the Tournament of Power and “the next 30 years of my life”: “You are not my ally” (ep 0057 00:09:21–00:09:54, 00:39:23); parts from him with a promised rematch (ep 0085 00:07:18–00:10:07); distrusts him even against Lucif (ep 0174 00:15:26–00:15:41) but at the end gives him his power and forgiveness and is fused into him (ep 0180 00:29:15–00:31:50, 00:38:08–00:40:43).
• Goku and Vegeta: respected them and longed for a rematch (ep 0022 00:07:55–00:08:15); believed Goku had become a murderer of gods (ep 0022 00:12:32–00:13:51). Goku inside Vegito: Jiren stops his Hakai when Goku begs him as “my friend” (ep 0058 00:19:26–00:19:50) and warns him to escape “this creature” (ep 0058 00:28:20–00:28:35). He pins Vegeta and fights Goku, who beats and spares him (ep 0134 00:36:43–00:38:14; ep 0135; ep 0136 00:21:52–00:24:33); later he backs Goku’s plan against Lucif (ep 0172 00:14:06–00:14:51).
• Yamoshi: took him for a demon; beaten by him (ep 0057).
• Makoto: came to execute him, cut him down, and possessed his body (ep 0063 00:37:29–00:38:56; ep 0064; ep 0069 00:34:08–00:35:29).
• Hit: fought him in the Tournament of Power; while possessed, the real Jiren tries to warn him (ep 0073 00:19:19, 00:44:09–00:44:16).
• Frieza: recognised from within his possessed body — “I… Know you…” (ep 0078 00:04:31–00:05:14).
• Lucif: fought him as an equal for a time (ep 0169 00:22:52–00:30:54); killed by him (ep 0180 00:31:31–00:31:50).

Abilities / traits

• Self-perfected Ultra Instinct with no visible aura (ep 0022 00:04:22–00:04:43).
• After 20 years in the Pyramid of Power, power “far beyond even Beerus”, by Vegito’s sense (ep 0022 00:24:22); speed “like nothing else we’ve seen so far” (ep 0022 00:24:31).
• Battles and trains alone (ep 0022 00:16:11, 00:17:42–00:17:52).
• Wore a weighted robe whose fall explodes like a bomb (ep 0024 00:05:04–00:05:29).
• A red-eyed energy barrier that repels Vegito’s absorber (ep 0024 00:10:10–00:10:46).
• Mastered Ultra Instinct, enough to punch through a Final Flash (ep 0024 00:16:48–00:17:27); Vegito says he is still “a few levels behind” in it (ep 0024 00:18:58).
• A giant apparition of his MUI aura, like Vegito’s final form, after mentally fighting Goku over 100,000 times (ep 0024 00:28:18–00:28:49, 00:31:23–00:31:37).
• Hakai (ep 0026 00:28:48–00:29:07); handles a time ring “with perfect control” at once (ep 0026 00:24:42).
• His giant aura apparition returned at once even in his weakened state (ep 0028 00:04:12–00:04:21); he can summon the Pyramid of Power with a snap (ep 0028 00:26:29–00:26:36); the longest he lasted inside was 10 days (ep 0028 00:26:20).
• Pyramid-trained power (ep 0057): tanks Yamoshi’s blows and point-blank blasts; a “complete hakaishin form” with destroyer symbols on his chest (ep 0057 00:13:57–00:14:34); magma from the ground “Moro style” (ep 0057 00:22:10); a clone (ep 0057 00:25:29); a Hakai ball (ep 0057 00:26:43); speed that beat Mastered Ultra Instinct (ep 0057 00:41:54–00:42:57).
• Demon horn — grew “shortly after I was trapped… As my rage, anger and power grew” (ep 0057 00:15:27–00:15:42); per Yamoshi, the mark of a god killer (ep 0057 00:18:06–00:19:04).
• Horn at will (ep 0064) — his horn now “under his control”, with Ultra Instinct-like eyes; a katana’s energy slash barely marks his skull (ep 0064 00:23:52–00:24:50). Built-in Ultra Instinct dodges; the arm-spin he used on Hit in the Tournament of Power; a red aura that throws off a chokehold (ep 0064 00:27:41–00:33:05).
• Two-horned form (ep 0065) — blackened eyes, Hakaishin symbols turned black, purple ornaments on his chest, two demon horns; speed that leaves after-images (ep 0065 00:14:49–00:15:16, 00:17:33–00:17:41). Hakai on a katana (ep 0065 00:21:23–00:22:09); a “premonition of death”: his eyes flash red, the foe freezes and takes many unseen blows at once (ep 0065 00:28:06–00:29:13). Reset his own broken wrist (ep 0065 00:32:57–00:33:26).

• Later feats: red demonic eyes; beats base Goku and outpaces Seraphim stage 2 Goku (ep 0135 00:13:21–00:28:38); fights Lucif as an equal for a time, with “the power of a devil” (ep 0169 00:22:52–00:30:54).

Open questions

• What did he know in ep 0177 (“They don’t know. Do they?”)? Never spelled out; he gives himself to Vegito in ep 0180. See jiren-knew.
• The name of his village is only heard, as “Dora” (ep 0028 00:07:26); perhaps “Doro” (ep 0030 00:03:12).
• Answered: his side — his own, until he dies for Vegito against Lucif (ep 0058 00:13:58; ep 0180 00:29:15–00:31:50; see jiren-alone, jiren-hakaishin); Marcarita — he gives her up to Vegito (ep 0028 00:14:20–00:14:42; see jiren-clan); the pyramid — he gets out (ep 0056; see jiren-trapped); his death in ep 0064 — he survives (ep 0065 00:13:06; see jiren-death).
