Aliases & name spellings

• Guts — name given by himself (ep 0046 00:02:25); spelling from the ep 0046 title. Heard “Gus”, “GOTS” (ep 0046). See names.
• “First of the Five Strongest” (ep 0044 00:45:35; ep 0046 00:02:41); “the swordsman”, “the black swordsman” (narration); “Iron Man”, “metal head”, “slave boy”, “pile of junk” (Vegito, ep 0045–0046).

Overview

The first — and, by his own account, the weakest — of the five strongest in the multiverse (ep 0046 00:05:39–00:05:55). Armoured and caped, with a huge sword, the Blade of Destruction (ep 0044 00:44:43; ep 0046 00:27:02). Sent “on the orders of the priest himself” from outside the timeline to kill Vegito (ep 0045 00:04:27–00:04:41). He beat Vegito and cut him in two (ep 0045), but Vegito, after absorbing Majin Buu, took his sword, cut off his limbs, drained him and killed him (ep 0046 00:35:14–00:43:31). Iwan reanimated his body as a puppet (ep 0052 00:12:33–00:12:55), which Vegito erased (ep 0053 00:33:59–00:34:18); since then he exists only as one of Vegito’s apparitions (ep 0053 00:15:26; ep 0091; ep 0179 00:14:08–00:14:17).

Affiliations & relationships

• Grand Priest (“Daishinkan”) and Zeno: serves them with reverence (ep 0045 00:05:26); the Grand Priest is “even further beyond” the five (ep 0046 00:05:55).
• The other four of the five strongest: “All four above me surpass my power” (ep 0046 00:05:39–00:05:55).
• “The time patrol”: with them, the five must correct Vegito’s timelines (ep 0046 00:04:13).
• The angels and gods: calls the angels “my angels” and is pained to strike gods, even as apparitions (ep 0045 00:13:04, 00:18:02–00:19:19).
• Ultra Vegito: his target and killer.
• Madara: his former master — “Guts was once my student” (ep 0049 00:15:04–00:15:13); Guts hoped to become the strongest of the five one day (ep 0049 00:07:07).
• Iwan: reanimated him as a puppet (ep 0053 00:12:41–00:12:57).
• Vegito: “perhaps… One of the only Gods… Vegito had grown a level of respect for” (ep 0053 00:32:11–00:32:28); he had nothing to do with what happened to Vegito’s loved ones (ep 0053 00:32:43–00:32:58).

Abilities / traits

• Strength and speed beyond Vegito’s final form at first: catches his punch, breaks his wrist, outspeeds Ultra Instinct angels (ep 0045 00:06:20, 00:08:12, 00:12:51).
• The Blade of Destruction: storms from one swing, delayed cuts, Hakai coating that returns a Hakai, comes back when thrown (ep 0045); “One of the legendary Demon Emperors resides within this sword” (ep 0046 00:28:22). Vegito suspected his power was tied to it (ep 0045 00:28:37).
• His partly erased body returns to normal (ep 0045 00:20:25–00:20:38).
• Very old: “us higher beings have survived for millennia” (ep 0045 00:37:40); his energy is “ancient” and seemingly endless (ep 0046 00:42:19, 00:43:02).
• Honour: offers Vegito last words and his name (ep 0046 00:01:10, 00:02:25).

Variants

• Hub: Guts.
• Guts (god-killer Goku’s timeline) — the first of that timeline’s five strongest, beaten by god-killer Goku and fused into him (ep 0196 00:24:42–00:26:21).

Status

• Erased: his reanimated body, Iwan’s puppet, was erased by Vegito’s Hakai (ep 0053 00:33:59–00:34:18). His energy lives on as Vegito’s apparition (ep 0053 00:15:26).
• Before that: dead — limbs cut off and erased, drained, neck snapped by Vegito (ep 0046 00:39:41–00:43:31); then reanimated by Iwan, standing beside him with lifeless eyes, groaning incoherently (ep 0052 00:12:33–00:12:55).

History

• ep 0044 00:44:25–00:45:35: crashes down as Vegito is about to absorb Buu.
• ep 0045: defeats Vegito; erases his apparitions; cuts him in two.
• ep 0046 00:02:25: names himself; explains the five; loses his kill to Buu and leaves; returns; is beaten by the Buu-absorbed Vegito and killed.
• ep 0049 00:08:43–00:09:09: (Madara) Guts “defeat[ed] and seal[ed] one of the legendary emperors of the demon realm… one of the weakest ones”.
• ep 0052 00:12:33–00:12:55: appears beside Iwan on Arak’s planet, “completely reanimated”, lifeless-eyed.
• ep 0053 00:10:20–00:34:18: Iwan’s puppet, “completely under my control”, at full power; cut in half by Vegito, he re-forms; Vegito speaks to him — “What has he done to you Guts?” — and erases him. Vegito also fights with an apparition made from Guts’s “true energies” (00:15:26–00:18:19).
• ep 0076 00:38:36–00:39:43: (apparition) Vegito’s Guts apparition strikes Goku and detonates.
• ep 0091: as Vegito’s apparition, impales Dai with Makoto; falls lifeless and fades (00:14:29–00:15:03, 00:18:25–00:18:53).
• ep 0107 00:12:46–00:13:11 (mentioned): Yamoshi says Guts “sealed a mere demon king and called it an emperor”. See retcons.
• ep 0179 00:14:08–00:14:17: (apparition) among the fallen foes whose energy Vegito replicates in his army of the dead.

Open questions

• Why does his name sound familiar to Vegito (ep 0046 00:02:41)?
• What is the demon in his sword? Not an emperor at all, says Yamoshi — “a mere demon king” (ep 0107 00:12:46–00:13:11; see retcons); it is never named. See blade-of-destruction.
