Summary

Devil Trunks absorbs the dying Goten, promising to release him one day “like a fusion” (ep 0229 00:01:16–00:02:41). In a flashback to training, Kazuya explains the Devil Gene: born users like Rani and himself are strongest, rare mutations make “the real monsters”, and those who conquer the demon realm and become the devil gain a dormant, recessive form that a teacher can trigger — so Vegito, Shallot, Lucif, Omni Vegito and even Trunks can transform (ep 0229 00:04:27–00:07:46). Trunks qualifies because he never freed the Lucif inside him; to take his gene he must sacrifice him — and Trunks did, cutting his inner Lucif in half (ep 0229 00:08:10–00:11:08). Ranin answers that he is the Devil Gene, born when his mother “was smited by father”, and his tail is already devil-transformed (ep 0229 00:12:36–00:13:20). With Goten’s power Trunks overwhelms Ranin for a while and tries to absorb him; Ranin’s tail blades destroy his arm, which grows back as an armoured spear (ep 0229 00:14:13–00:20:54). Kazuya tells Vegito that Trunks can’t transform fully on a gene not given to him, and must win fast (ep 0229 00:21:35–00:22:23). The incomplete gene drains Trunks; he coughs blood and Ranin stomps and slaps him into a ruin (ep 0229 00:24:16–00:32:30). Vegito yells for Trunks to surrender — mostly for the power he holds; Trunks starts to say “I give up” but Ranin’s diving kick lands first (ep 0229 00:30:59–00:33:55). Ultra Vegito, in base with red Seraphim, appears in time to stop Ranin: “This is hello, son” (ep 0229 00:34:21–00:35:08).

Key events

  • 00:01:53–00:02:06 Trunks: “Think of this as like a fusion… I’ll release you one day. I’m not Vegito.”
  • 00:05:16–00:05:43 Kazuya: the Devil Gene passes by bloodline; Rani and he were born with it.
  • 00:05:48–00:06:13 Mutations “create the real monsters… One in a trillion”.
  • 00:06:16–00:07:18 Conquering the demon realm and becoming devil gives a recessive, dormant gene that a teacher can trigger.
  • 00:07:20–00:07:39 Capable of devil transformation: Vegito, “the Lucif Vegito within you”, Shallot, Lucif, Omni Vegito and Trunks.
  • 00:08:25–00:09:07 Trunks still holds Lucif; he must “Sacrifice Lucif to attain it”.
  • 00:10:26–00:10:59 Trunks cuts his timeline’s Lucif in half inside his mind.
  • 00:12:48–00:13:11 Ranin: “I am the devil gene. When mother was smited by father, her entire gene was sent away. And from that alone, I was born.”
  • 00:14:19–00:14:29 Trunks powers up with Goten’s power, “one of Castiel’s greatest creations”.
  • 00:18:50–00:19:23 Trunks tries to absorb Ranin through his tail; the tail’s blades stop him.
  • 00:19:36 Ranin: “I’m the main character here, Trunks!”
  • 00:20:22–00:20:50 Trunks’s arm regrows via Buu abilities as an armoured spear.
  • 00:21:54–00:22:23 Kazuya: Trunks forced out a gene “not even given to him”; he must win as he is, and fast.
  • 00:23:50–00:24:36 The incomplete Devil Gene drains Trunks.
  • 00:27:15–00:28:32 Trunks clutches his chest and coughs blood.
  • 00:31:03–00:31:11 Vegito: “Give up now… This round doesn’t have death as the only way to lose! Bring me that power!”
  • 00:33:41–00:34:01 Trunks’s surrender comes too late as Ranin’s kick lands.
  • 00:34:39–00:35:03 Ultra Vegito stops Ranin: “This is hello, son.”

Uncertainties

  • Ranin says his mother “was smited by father”; earlier, Dai’s Almighty Smite took Rani’s gene and child away (ep 0157; ep 0175) — logged as an apparent contradiction.
  • Whether Trunks survives Ranin’s kick isn’t shown before Vegito arrives (he does: he is fighting Vegeta for Zeus’s lightning in ep 0246 00:16:03–00:16:15); whether Vegito stepping in breaks the round’s rules isn’t said.
  • “the Lucif Vegito within you” (00:07:29) is as heard.
